1993 – The Freest Nigerian Election
On June 12, 1993, Nigeria recorded its most transparent and peaceful presidential election under Babangida’s military regime. Chief MKO Abiola, representing the SDP, secured 58.36% of the vote, winning 20 of 30 states, yet the results were later annulled .

    Posthumous Recognition of Abiola
Following the annulment and Abiola’s detention, Nigeria witnessed unrest that eventually led to the Fourth Republic in 1999. On June 12, 2018, President Buhari officially designated this as Nigeria's new Democracy Day, replacing May 29, and posthumously honoured Abiola with the GCFR, its highest national award .

2023 – Niger River Boat Disaster
On June 12, 2023, tragedy struck in Kwara State when a passenger boat sank near Pategi on the Niger River. Over 108 people, many en route to a wedding, lost their lives in the capsizing.
